We recognize the accomplishments of people and organizations who help protect Fernie’s diverse built heritage and history.

To support the long-term preservation, conseervation and interpretation of Fernie’s built heritage, Heritage Fernie offers the following awards and bursaries.

The Sombrowsksi Heritage Award

The Heritage Award is given each year to acknowledge the special accomplishments, projects, and efforts that further our goal of heritage conservation in Fernie. Protecting Fernie’s heritage buildings and sites – in part by raising public awareness of heritage issues through advocacy and education – helps:

  • Sustain our diverse communities and traditions
  • Strengthen community identity and boost tourism
  • Reuse buildings and materials

Anyone can make a nomination for projects that meet the criteria. Nominated projects don’t need to be protected or on the Heritage Register.  Nominations open in January and we present the award in May as part of the Fernie & District Historical Society Annual General Meeting. The recipient is recognized with plaque and a $1000 cash award to help offset expenses with the heritage project in one of the following categories:

  • Conservation
  • Publications and Programs
  • or Community Awareness and Revitalization

Apply online.  Applications for 2018 will be accepted from February 1 to 2018.
